Connect Google Search Console

RankUpside connects to Search Console through Google sign-in with read-only access. Sign in with the Google account that can see your clients' properties and leave the Search Console box ticked. Every property that account can read appears in Add clients. Connect more Google accounts from Settings if clients are spread across several.

What it doesn't do: RankUpside can't change anything in Search Console or add properties to it. Properties where the account is only an unverified user don't appear.

Updated

What RankUpside can see

One Google permission, read-only

Google scope

View Search Console data for your verified sites

webmasters.readonly

  • Clicks, impressions and positions by page and search, 13 weeks back
  • Page titles, fetched from the client's public site
  • No edits in Search Console or anywhere in Google
  • No access to Gmail, Drive, Analytics or Ads

Revoke access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Google tokens are stored encrypted.

What Google asks for

Sign-in asks for your basic profile and email, plus one Search Console permission: View Search Console data for your verified sites (webmasters.readonly). Nothing for Gmail, Drive, Analytics or Ads.

Google returns a refresh token so the weekly sync can run while you're away. RankUpside stores it encrypted. The full list of what's stored is in Data and permissions.

Connect

  1. Click Start free trial or Sign in.
  2. Pick the Google account that can see your clients' properties.
  3. On Google's consent screen, leave the Search Console box ticked and continue.
  4. You land back in the app. Every property that account can read appears in Clients › Add clients.

Sign-in messages and fixes

The sign-in page shows one of these messages when something goes wrong. Each one is quoted as it appears.

Sign-in messages, what they mean and what to do
MessageWhat happenedWhat to do
“Search Console access wasn't granted. Sign in again and leave the Search Console box ticked.”The Search Console box was unticked on Google's consent screen.Sign in again and keep the box ticked.
“Google didn't return offline access. Remove the app at myaccount.google.com/permissions and sign in again.”Google didn't issue the long-lived access the weekly sync needs.Remove RankUpside from your Google account's third-party access page, then sign in again.
“Google sign-in was cancelled.”The Google window was closed or the request was declined.Start the sign-in again.
“That sign-in link expired. Try again.”The sign-in check didn't match this browser, for example after a long pause or a second tab.Start the sign-in again.
“Google sign-in failed. Try again in a minute.”The exchange with Google failed.Wait a minute and try again.

More than one Google account

If clients are spread across Google accounts, open Settings › Connections and choose Connect another Google account. Properties from every connected account show up in Add clients. Each client is one property that one of the connected accounts can read.

A property is missing

  • The connected account needs owner, full user or restricted user access on the property in Search Console. Properties where it's only an unverified user are left out.
  • Domain properties (sc-domain:) and URL-prefix properties both work, and each counts as its own client site.
  • After the client adds your account in Search Console, reopen Add clients and the property appears.

Revoke access

Remove RankUpside at any time from your Google account's third-party access page (myaccount.google.com/permissions). Syncing stops. Saved data stays until you remove the client in its settings. See Data and permissions and Security.

Questions.

Can RankUpside change my Search Console settings?
No. The access is read-only. It can read search performance, the list of properties and URL inspection results, and nothing else.
Which Google account should I sign in with?
The one that has access to your clients' Search Console properties. If they're split across accounts, connect each one under Settings › Connections.
Why don't I see a client's property?
The connected account needs to be an owner or a full or restricted user on that property in Search Console. Ask the client to add the account, then reopen Add clients.
Is a domain property and a URL-prefix property the same site?
No. Each Search Console property counts as one client site. Pick the one with the fuller data, usually the domain property.
