Click-share attribution

Click-share attribution assigns a won deal to the page the customer landed on, then splits its value across that page's searches by each search's share of clicks. Search Console never says which search one visitor typed, so the split is a stated rule, and clicks from searches Google hides keep their own line.

What it doesn't do: It doesn't prove that a search caused a sale. It allocates revenue by a rule you can read and check.

How it works, step by step

  1. The won deal arrives with its landing page, by CSV, webhook or the form snippet.
  2. It's matched to that page in Search Console.
  3. The page's search clicks over the last 13 weeks are the denominator.
  4. Each named search gets the deal value times its clicks, divided by the page's clicks.
  5. The remainder stays on a line for searches Google hides.
search share = deal value × search clicks ÷ page clicks
hidden line = deal value − sum of search shares
Shares round down to the cent, so the hidden line also absorbs rounding.

How it shows up in RankUpside

Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. The home page had 32 search clicks in the window and one $4,200 won deal (D-1042). "gutter guard installation" sent 1 click, so it's allocated $4,200 × 1/32 = $131. Most of the page's clicks have no named search, so most of the $4,200 stays on the hidden line.

The table beside this definition shows the split for all three sample deals.

Common mistakes

  • Giving 100% of a deal to the top search.
  • Dropping hidden clicks from the denominator, which inflates every named search.
  • Calling allocated revenue "earned".

Related term: Allocated revenue

Allocated revenue is what this rule produces: won-deal revenue assigned to pages and searches.

How revenue is split

Click-share attribution: questions.

Why not give the whole deal to the search with the most clicks?
Because the page had other searches too. Splitting by share of clicks spreads the value in proportion to the traffic each search sent, which is the most even-handed rule available without visitor-level data.
What happens to revenue from hidden searches?
It stays on a separate line labeled as searches Google hides. It's never spread across the named searches, so no search gets credit for clicks Google didn't name.
Does it count deals from Google Ads or the map pack?
No. A deal whose source names ads, social, directories or the Business Profile is excluded from search revenue. Tag the Business Profile website link with utm_source=gbp so map-pack leads stay separate.
