Demand drop

A demand drop is a fall in clicks caused by fewer people searching, while the page holds its position. Seasonal services are the usual case: searches for them fall outside their season every year. Impressions fall with clicks, average position stays flat, and the same searches show lower volume in keyword data.

What it doesn't do: RankUpside doesn't flag this as its own finding yet. It's planned. Today the 12-month trend on each search shows it.

How to check it yourself

  1. In Search Console, compare impressions and average position for the page over the same weeks.
  2. Check the searches' monthly volume over 12 months. A seasonal dip repeats every year.
  3. With 16 months of history, compare the same weeks last year.

How it shows up in RankUpside today

Each search in Client › Searches carries a 12-month volume trend, refreshed monthly. The Losing rank finding requires position to fall at least 2 places, so a pure demand drop isn't mislabeled as a slide.

Weekly Search Console history is kept for about 16 months, which allows a same-weeks-last-year check. A dedicated demand-drop finding is planned.

How to explain it to a client

Lead with the position: it held. Then show the impressions falling in step with search volume for the same searches, and last year's same weeks if the history covers them. A client hears "fewer people searched this month, and we kept our place" very differently from "traffic is down".

Then offer something to do: push the services that are in season now, so the site catches the demand that exists.

Common mistakes

  • Rewriting pages during an off-season dip.
  • Reporting a seasonal fall as an SEO failure.
  • Comparing four weeks of December with four weeks of October without the year-ago view.

Demand drop: questions.

How do I explain a demand drop to a client?
Show that position held while impressions fell, then show the 12-month volume trend for the same searches. If last year's same weeks dipped too, it's seasonal. Suggest pushing in-season services in the meantime.
Does RankUpside detect demand drops?
Not as its own finding yet; it's planned. The Searches view shows each search's 12-month trend, and the Losing rank finding only fires when position also falls, so a demand drop isn't reported as lost rank.
