Ranking drop (losing rank)

A ranking drop is when a page loses clicks because its position in Google fell, not because fewer people searched or a map pack or AI Overview appeared. Both signals move together: clicks down, average position worse. The usual causes are a competitor's stronger page, an outdated page, or lost internal links.

What it doesn't do: A short dip isn't a ranking drop. Compare four weeks with the four before, and check that impressions and demand held.

Fix: Refresh the page against what now outranks it, and link to it from related pages.

How it shows up in RankUpside

The Losing rank finding fires when a page with at least 10 clicks in the prior four weeks loses 30% or more of them, and its average position on buyer searches falls at least 2 places, or the page stops showing. When the weekly live check sees new domains above the client, a Passed by competitors finding names them.

Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. The gutter guard brands comparison went from 21 clicks to 11 (-48%), and its position from 21.2 to 25.1. The fix: compare the page with what now ranks above it, refresh prices and dates, and add links from strong related pages.

How to check it yourself

  1. In Search Console, compare the last 28 days with the previous period for the page.
  2. Tick Clicks and Position together. A real drop moves both.
  3. Search the page's top query and note who now ranks above it.

Common mistakes

  • Reacting to one bad week.
  • Calling a seasonal fall a ranking drop.
  • Rewriting a page that simply dropped out of the index.

Related term: Demand drop

A demand drop also cuts clicks, but position holds, and the fix is different.

Demand dropFewer people searching, so clicks fall even though rank held.

Read the guide: why did my clicks drop?

Ranking drop: questions.

How do I know if a page lost rank or lost demand?
Look at average position and impressions together. If position held and impressions fell, demand dropped. If position got worse and clicks fell, the page lost rank.
What should I fix first on a page that's losing rank?
Look at the pages now ranking above it. Update what's out of date, cover what they cover, and add internal links from your strongest related pages. Check it's still indexed before anything else.
