Geo-tagged title (city in title)

A geo-tagged title is a page title that names a city, such as "Gutter Tiger Stripes Fairview". It helps on local service searches but hurts on searches that don't name a place, like "tiger striping on gutters": the result looks local, so searchers elsewhere skip it. Leading with the searched words usually fixes it.

What it doesn't do: It doesn't apply to service pages that rank for "service + city" searches. Keep the city there.

Fix: Lead the title with what people search. A 10-minute fix.

How it shows up in RankUpside

The City in title finding runs for local businesses only. It fires when a page is on page 1 (position 10.5 or better) with at least 200 impressions and 1% click-through or less, its title names one of the client's areas, none of its top 5 searches names a place, and its top search isn't a hire-or-buy-now search. Pages an AI answer is taking clicks from are skipped, because a title fix won't help there.

Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. The post /blog/gutter-tiger-stripes-fairview had 473 impressions and 2 clicks at #9.0. Old title: "Gutter Tiger Stripes Fairview | Remove Black Streaks". Suggested: "Tiger Striping on Gutters: What Causes It and How to Remove It".

How to check it yourself

  1. In Search Console › Performance › Pages, open the page, then the Queries tab.
  2. If the top searches never name a place but the title does, the title is the suspect.
  3. Search one of those queries from another city and read the result as a stranger would.

How to rewrite it

  • Lead with the words people searched.
  • Add one specific from the page, such as the cause or the method.
  • Move the city to the end, or drop it.

Common mistakes

  • Stripping the city from service pages that rank for "service + city" searches.
  • Rewriting a title that sits under a map pack. The cause there is the pack, not the title.

Related term: Click-through rate

A city in the title is one of three causes of a low click-through rate at a good position, and the only one a title fixes.

Geo-tagged title: questions.

Should local businesses put the city in every title?
On service pages that rank for "service + city" searches, yes. On blog posts and guides that rank for searches without a place, the city makes the result look irrelevant to most searchers. Check the page's top searches first.
Will removing the city hurt local rankings?
On pages whose searches don't name a place, the city wasn't helping them rank for those searches. Service pages are a different case and keep the city. The report only flags pages whose top searches never name one.
