Why a #1 page gets no clicks under a map pack
On a local search such as "gutter guard", Google shows the map and three Business Profile listings before the first organic link. Most searchers pick a business from the map, call it or ask for directions without scrolling. The organic result still counts an impression at #1, but the clicks go to the listings above it.
So a page can hold position 1 to 3 for weeks with a click-through rate near zero, and nothing on the page is wrong.
How it shows up in RankUpside
The Map pack finding runs for local businesses only. It fires on short local searches (5 words or fewer) where the page sits at position 3 or better with at least 100 impressions in four weeks and 1% click-through or less.
Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. The home page ranks #1.6 for "gutter guard" with 578 impressions and 0 clicks, across 5 searches totaling 1,496 impressions and 0 clicks.
The fix is Business Profile work for that service and town: the right category, services, photos and review requests. The finding also says what not to do: don't rewrite the title, because the page already ranks.
When the weekly live rank check sees the pack, the evidence turns from inferred to observed and the card names who is in it. If the client is already in the pack, the fix shifts to getting the listing clicked.
How to check it yourself
- Search the term from the client's town, or set the location in a clean browser.
- Note whether a map pack shows, which three businesses are in it, and whether the client is one of them.
- Compare with Search Console: position 1 to 3 with almost no clicks on the same search points to the pack.
Google's own help page, Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, names the three factors: relevance, distance and prominence.
Common mistakes
- Rewriting a #1 page's title to fix a low click-through rate.
- Counting map-pack calls as organic website leads.
- Checking the results from the agency's office instead of the client's area.
