Local SEO report template

A local SEO report shows whether the business appears in the map pack for its main searches, how its pages rank for service and city searches, the calls and form leads search brought in, and what to fix next. Map pack problems are fixed in the Business Profile, so the report should say when a title rewrite won't help.

What it doesn't do: RankUpside checks map pack presence from the client's city each week. It doesn't run a geo-grid across the service area or track reviews, and Business Profile calls and directions arrive once Google approves its API access.

The template.

Eight sections for a business that wins customers from the map pack and from city searches. Each has a line on what to write and an example from a fictional gutter company in the fictional town of Fairview.

  1. SummaryRankUpside fills this

One or two sentences: what moved for the business's main services and towns, and why.

Example The home page ranks #1–2 for “gutter guard”, but the map pack takes the clicks, so this month's work is in the Business Profile.

  2. Map pack presenceRankUpside fills this

For each main service search: is the business in the map pack, and where does its website rank below it?

Example “gutter guard”: map pack shows, business not in it, website #1.6.

  3. Service and city searchesRankUpside fills this

Searches that name a service, a town or “near me”, with clicks and position. These are the buyers.

Example “gutter cleaning fairview”: 5 clicks at #6.0.

  4. Calls and form leads from searchRankUpside fills this

Calls and form leads that landed on a page from Google search, next to the month before. Write “not tracked yet” rather than zero.

Example Leads: not tracked yet. Won jobs this month: 2.

  5. Business Profile actions

Calls, direction requests and website clicks from the Business Profile, next to the month before. Copy them in by hand for now.

  6. Why it movedRankUpside fills this

The cause behind each change, in plain words.

Example People searching “tiger striping on gutters” skip a result whose title says Fairview.

  7. Fixes in orderRankUpside fills this

Split them: Business Profile fixes and website fixes. Say when a title rewrite won't help.

Example Business Profile: add gutter guard photos and ask for reviews. Website: retitle the tiger-striping post.

  8. Work done and resultsRankUpside fills this

What changed since the last report, the date, and the result so far.

Example Retitled the gutter-cleaning schedule post on Aug 26: position 11.8 → 8.9.

Sample dataExample lines come from a fictional gutter company, Copperline Gutters. Business Profile actions stay manual until Google approves API access.

The map pack section.

Rank alone misleads on local searches. The map pack sits above the first organic result, so a page can hold #1 and get no clicks. Show both, search by search.

City in the title, when it hurts.

People searching a how-to don't type a city, so a title that leads with one looks local and gets skipped. This is a website fix, the opposite of the map pack case. More on geo-tagged titles.

Calls and leads.

Clicks are the start. Calls and form leads show whether search brought work. CallRail and WhatConverts send calls and form leads by webhook; other trackers use the generic webhook. Until a tracker is connected, the report shows a dash, never a zero. Setup: CallRail.

Local report questions.

What should a local SEO report include?
Map pack presence for the main service searches, rankings for service and city searches, calls and form leads from search, Business Profile actions such as calls and direction requests, the cause of each change and the fixes in order.
Why does a page rank #1 but get no clicks?
On local searches the map pack often sits above the first organic result and takes the clicks. A page can rank #1–2 organically and still get almost none. The fix is in the Business Profile; rewriting the page title won't move those clicks.
How do I track Google Maps rankings for a client?
Check the search from the client's location and record whether the business is in the map pack. RankUpside does this weekly for up to 50 searches per client, from the client's city. For rank at every point across a service area, use a geo-grid tool such as Local Falcon.
Should the city name go in every page title?
Only where people search with the city. Service pages often should; how-to and cost posts usually shouldn't, because people searching them don't type a city. The report flags titles that name a city nobody searched.
Can the report include calls?
Yes, when calls are tracked. RankUpside accepts CallRail and WhatConverts calls and form leads, matches them to the landing page, and keeps paid and Business Profile calls separate.
