SEO client report template

A good SEO client report has eight parts: a one-sentence summary of what moved, key figures against the prior period, a trend chart, why each change happened, the fixes in order, work done and its results, the searches that brought buyers, and next steps. Copy the template below, or let RankUpside fill it from Search Console weekly.

What it doesn't do: The template is free to copy and works without RankUpside. RankUpside fills the search sections; ads, social, backlinks and site speed stay manual.

  1. SummaryRankUpside fills this

One or two sentences: what moved, by how much, and why. Lead with the change and its cause.

Example Search clicks rose 14% to 289 over the last four weeks. Clicks from named buyer searches rose from 22 to 27.

  2. Key figuresRankUpside fills this

Clicks, impressions, average position and clicks from buyer searches, each next to the prior four weeks.

    Example 289 clicks (253 before) · 46,318 impressions · position 21.7 (23.4 before) · 27 buyer clicks (22 before)

  3. Trend chartRankUpside fills this

Thirteen weeks of buyer clicks with the last four marked, so one good week doesn't read as a trend.

Example Peak week: 13 buyer clicks (week of Sep 21).

  4. Why it movedRankUpside fills this

One line per change: the cause, and what that means for the fix.

Example The home page ranks #1–2 for “gutter guard” but the map pack takes the clicks. A title rewrite won't move these clicks.

  5. Fixes in orderRankUpside fills this

Each fix names the page, the cause, what to do and what not to touch. Most valuable first.

Example 1. /blog/best-gutter-guard-brands-comparison-fairview: clicks down 48%. Refresh prices and dates and add internal links. 2. Home page: work the Business Profile, leave the title alone.

  6. Work done and resultsRankUpside fills this

What changed since the last report, on what date, and how the page has done since, next to the whole site.

Example Title rewrite on /blog/how-often-to-clean-gutters, Aug 26: position 11.8 → 8.9, page clicks up 56% while the whole site rose 28%.

  7. Searches that brought buyersRankUpside fills this

Searches that hire or buy, with clicks and position. Leave how-to and brand searches out of this list.

Example “gutter cleaning fairview”: 5 clicks at #6.0.

  8. Next steps and contact

What you'll do before the next report, anything you need from the client, and how to reach you.

Example This week we refresh the brands comparison. Could you send photos of recent gutter guard installs for the Business Profile?

Client report questions.

What should be in an SEO client report?
Eight sections: a summary of what moved, key figures against the prior period, a trend chart, the cause of each change, the fixes in order, work done and its results, the searches that brought buyers, and next steps. Keep each section short enough to read in a minute.
How long should an SEO client report be?
One screen for the summary and figures, and two or three more for causes and fixes. Clients read the first sentence and the fix list most. Put detail tables last.
How do I explain a drop in clicks to a client?
Name the cause and the fix in one sentence each. For example: the map pack takes the clicks on this search, so the fix is Business Profile work, and a title change won't help. Show the numbers behind it underneath.
Should an SEO report show keyword rankings?
Show average position for the searches that matter, next to clicks. Search Console reports average position for every search; a weekly live check adds the rank people actually see, plus the map pack and AI Overview. A table of hundreds of rankings rarely helps a client decide anything.
Can I white-label this template?
Yes. In RankUpside the report carries your agency name, logo and one accent color, and the client never sees our name.
Is there a Google Docs version?
Copy the template as text and paste it into Google Docs or Word. The headings and example lines carry over.
