Live rank check

A live rank check reads Google's results for one search, from one location and device, at one moment, and records where a site appears and what else is on the page. Search Console's average position blends every appearance over weeks. The live check shows what a searcher sees today; the average shows the trend.

What it doesn't do: One live check can miss personalization and local variation, and it says nothing about clicks. Read it next to Search Console.

How it shows up in RankUpside

Every week, for up to 50 of each client's searches, on desktop, from the client's city for local businesses (the country otherwise). Each check records the client's rank and URL, the top 10 domains, the map pack and who is in it, the AI Overview (present, absent or unknown), the domains it cites and whether it cites the client. The last 12 checks per search are kept. Each search costs 2 credits (provisional).

The searches are picked from the client's own data: first the searches behind open findings (map pack, AI answer, close to the top 3, and the top searches on a revenue page that's dropping), then tracked searches by revenue, value and impressions. Brand searches are left out.

The results feed findings as observed evidence, and name competitors that passed the client.

Why the two numbers disagree

  • Location: the live check is one place; the average covers every place.
  • Device: the live check is desktop; the average includes phones.
  • Personalization and timing: results shift by person and by day.
  • Features: a map-pack listing or an AI Overview citation can count as a position in Search Console.

How to check it yourself

Search from the client's area in a clean browser, or set a location in a results-page tool, and note where the client appears and what sits above it.

Related term: Average position

Live rank check: questions.

Is RankUpside a rank tracker?
Partly. It reads average position from Search Console for every search the client appears for, and checks up to 50 of each client's searches in live Google results every week. It doesn't track hundreds of keywords daily.
Which searches get a live check?
RankUpside picks them from the client's own data: first the searches behind open findings, such as a possible map pack or AI Overview, then tracked searches ranked by revenue, estimated value and impressions. Brand searches are left out.
Why is the live rank different from Search Console?
The live check is one desktop result from one place at one time. Search Console averages every appearance across devices, places and days, and can count a map-pack listing as a position.
