Striking distance keywords

Striking distance keywords are searches where a page already ranks just outside the top results, usually positions 4 to 15. A small edit, such as putting the search in the title and H1 or adding internal links, can lift them into the top three or onto page one, where most clicks go.

What it doesn't do: Not every near miss is worth chasing. A search with low buyer intent, or one under a map pack or AI Overview, can climb and still bring few clicks.

How it shows up in RankUpside

The Close to the top 3 finding picks buyer searches at positions 4 to 15 with at least 100 impressions in four weeks. It keeps one per page and skips pages a map pack or AI answer finding already explains. Page-one searches aim for #3; page-two searches aim for #8.

The click gain uses the client's own CTR curve, so estimates stay small and believable. When the honest answer is tiny, the card says "less than 1 more click".

Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. "gutter cleaning fairview" sits at #6.0 with 495 impressions and 5 clicks. The fix: put the search in the title and H1, answer it in its own section, and link to the page from related pages.

How to find them yourself

  1. Open Search Console › Performance › Queries and tick Position.
  2. Filter position between 4 and 15 and sort by impressions.
  3. Remove informational and branded rows.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing informational searches with big impressions.
  • Promising a client a jump from #9 to #1.
  • Editing a page that's losing rank for another reason.

Related term: Search intent

Intent decides whether a near miss is worth the edit: only buyer searches bring customers.

Striking distance: questions.

What position counts as striking distance?
There's no official range. Most SEOs use positions 4 to 15 or 11 to 20. RankUpside uses 4 to 15 and aims page-one searches at #3 and page-two searches at #8.
How many clicks will I gain by moving up?
Fewer than most curves suggest, especially for local searches. RankUpside estimates the gain from the client's own click-through rates by position, and says "less than 1 more click" when that's the honest answer.
Do striking distance keywords include informational searches?
They can, but RankUpside only flags buyer searches, because a climb on a how-to search often lands under an AI Overview and brings few clicks.
