Search intent

Search intent is what a person wants when they type a search: to learn something, compare options, find a specific site, or hire and buy. The same topic can carry different intents, such as "how to clean gutters" and "gutter cleaning near me". Sorting a client's searches by intent shows which traffic can turn into customers.

What it doesn't do: Intent is inferred from the words in the search. It's a strong signal, not a certainty about any one person.

The intent classes

RankUpside sorts every named search into one class by the words in it. These are the word lists for local service businesses; online stores and software companies get their own.

How it shows up in RankUpside

Transactional and commercial searches count as buyer searches. They drive buyer clicks, the striking distance finding and the Losing rank finding on buyer pages. Informational searches drive the AI answer finding, because Google often answers them with an AI Overview.

The services, areas and brand terms set in each client's settings sharpen the sort, so "gutter guard" reads as a service and the client's own name reads as brand.

Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business on a reserved .example domain. "gutter cleaning fairview" is a commercial search with a place in it. "catch basin vs pop up emitter" is informational, even though it's about drainage products the client installs.

How to check it yourself

  1. Export a client's queries from Search Console.
  2. Tag each row by its trigger words, and tag the client's name as brand.
  3. Add up clicks per class.
  4. Search a few by hand. The results page shows what Google thinks the intent is: a map and ads for buyers, an AI Overview or videos for learners.

Common mistakes

  • Treating impressions from how-to searches as sales progress.
  • Writing a service page for an informational search.
  • Counting brand searches as SEO wins. People who already know the name would find the site anyway.

Related term: Buyer clicks

Buyer clicks add up the clicks from transactional and commercial searches, the ones that can become customers.

Buyer clicksClicks from searches that show intent to hire or buy.

Search intent: questions.

What are the main types of search intent?
Informational (learn), commercial (compare and check prices), transactional (hire or buy now) and navigational (find a known site or brand). RankUpside counts commercial and transactional searches as buyer searches.
Why does search intent matter for SEO reports?
Because traffic from different intents is worth different amounts. A rise in how-to clicks can hide a fall in hire-me clicks. Reporting buyer searches separately keeps the report honest about what's bringing customers.
