Keyword cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization is when two or more pages on the same site compete for the same search, so Google alternates between them and neither ranks as well as one strong page would. In Search Console it shows as one query with impressions split across several URLs and positions that swap week to week.

What it doesn't do: RankUpside doesn't flag this as its own finding yet. It's planned. Today you check it by hand in Search Console.

Updated

How to confirm it in Search Console

  1. Open Performance › Queries and click the query.
  2. Open the Pages tab. Two or more URLs with impressions for the same query is the signal.
  3. Compare week by week. If the URL Google shows keeps swapping, that's cannibalization.

Two URLs that show together, such as a page and its sitelink, aren't cannibalization.

How it relates to RankUpside today

The weekly sync stores clicks and impressions by page and search, so the data to spot it is there, and each opportunity lists the page's top searches. A dedicated cannibalization finding is planned.

Search Console analysis tools such as SEO Gets include a cannibalization report (checked Oct 20, 2026).

Common mistakes

  • Calling any two URLs on one query cannibalization.
  • Merging pages that serve different intents, such as a cost guide and a service page.

Related term: Search intent

Two pages on one search are only a problem when they serve the same intent.

Search intentWhat the searcher wants to do: learn, compare, buy or hire.

Keyword cannibalization: questions.

Is keyword cannibalization always bad?
No. A service page and a cost guide can both rank for "gutter repair cost" when they answer different intents. It's a problem when the pages answer the same intent and Google keeps swapping them.
Does RankUpside detect keyword cannibalization?
Not as its own finding yet. It's planned. The page-by-search data is already synced, so you can see which pages share a search in the Searches view.
What's the fastest fix?
If one page is clearly stronger, merge the weaker page's useful content into it and 301 the old URL. If both pages deserve to exist, retarget one to a different search and update its title and internal links.
