Revenue per click

Revenue per click is the won-deal revenue allocated to a page divided by the search clicks that page received in the same period. It turns a page's traffic into a dollar rate, so you can compare pages and size a fix by what an extra click on that page has been worth.

What it doesn't do: It describes the past period. One large deal on a page with few clicks makes the rate jumpy, so read it with the deal count.

The formula

revenue per click = allocated revenue on the page ÷ search clicks on the page

Use the same window for both. RankUpside's revenue window is the last 13 weeks. Page clicks include clicks from hidden queries, so the rate covers all of the page's search traffic.

How it shows up in RankUpside

PageAllocated revenueSearch clicksWon dealsRevenue per click

With one deal per page, these rates are rough signals. That's why the deal count sits next to each one.

Today fixes rank by value at stake, confidence and effort, and pages with won deals get extra weight (methodology). Ranking each fix by revenue at stake, its click gain times the page's revenue per click, is planned.

How to use it

  • Compare pages: a page with a high rate and few clicks is a candidate for more traffic.
  • Size a fix: extra clicks on a page times its rate gives a rough dollar range for the work.
  • Explain priorities to a client in money terms, with the deal count beside the rate.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing rates across windows of different length.
  • Using a one-deal page as a benchmark.
  • Adding ad-equivalent value to revenue.

Revenue per click: questions.

Is revenue per click the same as cost per click?
No. Cost per click is what an advertiser pays Google for one ad click. Revenue per click is what one organic click on a page has been worth in won deals. RankUpside keeps them apart and never adds them together.
How many deals do I need before revenue per click means anything?
More is better. With one or two deals, treat the number as a rough signal and show the deal count next to it. The rate settles as deals accumulate over several months.
