An AI Overview is the summary Google generates with AI at the top of some search results, with links to the pages it used. Because it answers the question on the results page, pages listed below it often get fewer clicks. A page can still earn visits and trust by being one of the links the overview cites.
What it doesn't do: This guide covers Google's AI Overviews. It doesn't cover ChatGPT, Perplexity or other AI assistants, which choose sources differently.

What an AI Overview is
An AI Overview is a summary Google writes with AI and shows at the top of some results pages, with links to the pages it drew from. Google's own description is short: "AI Overviews help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly" (AI features and your website, Google Search Central).
It is one of several SERP features: blocks on the results page other than the regular links. For the short definition, see AI Overview in the glossary.

Which searches show one
Google says AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search". In practice they show up most on informational searches: how, what, why and comparison questions. The intent of a search is the best early signal.

How AI Overviews change clicks
The mechanism is simple. The answer sits above the links, so many searchers read it and stop. The pages listed below still appear, but fewer people scroll down to click them.
In Search Console it looks like this: impressions hold or grow, position stays on page one, and the click-through rate falls toward zero on informational searches. Nothing on the page changed; the results page did.
How to tell if an AI Overview is taking your clicks
RankUpside uses one rule for this. A page gets an AI answer finding when how, what, why or vs searches at positions 1 to 10.5 make up at least half of its impressions, with at least 300 impressions in four weeks and 0.5% click-through or less.

Fix: Get the page cited in the AI answer, or aim it at buyer searches.
A title rewrite won't help.
Sample data: Copperline Gutters, a fictional business. "catch basin vs pop up emitter" and related searches: 372 impressions and 0 clicks at #7.9 across 9 searches.
The rule only says an AI Overview is likely. Confirm it on the live results page before telling a client. For the other causes of a drop, see why did my clicks drop?
How to check whether your page is cited
Search the query signed out, in a clean browser window.
For local searches, search from the client's town, or set the location there.
If an AI Overview shows, expand it and look for the client's domain among its links.
Note the date. Results vary by place and over time, so one check is one moment.
A weekly live rank check does the same thing on a schedule. In Search Console, Google says traffic from AI features is "reported on in the Performance report, within the 'Web' search type" (AI features and your website, last updated December 10, 2025). Check your own Search Console too, since this reporting has changed over time.
What to do about it
Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". Past that, the work is the same as making a page worth citing. Pick the branch that fits:

Situation
What to do
Your page isn't cited
Make it the best source to cite: a direct answer in the first lines, real numbers with their sources, clear headings that match the question, and an FAQ section.
Your page is already cited
Count it as visibility in the client report. The click may never come, but the client's name is in the answer.
A money site gets mostly informational traffic
Aim the page at buyer searches instead: prices, quotes, services and the towns the business covers.
In every case
A title rewrite won't bring the clicks back. The page already ranks; the answer sits above it.

AI Overview
An AI-written summary at the top of some results. Google: "AI Overviews help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly."
Above the regular results, only when Google's systems judge it "additive to classic Search"
Yes, to the supporting pages it drew from
Featured snippet
Google: "special boxes where the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first."
At or near the top of the results, and inside People also ask
Yes, to the one page it quotes
AI Mode
A separate AI search experience. Google: it is "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed."
Its own mode of Google Search, not the regular results page
Each week, for up to 50 of each client's searches, RankUpside checks the live Google results on desktop, from the client's city for local businesses. It records whether an AI Overview shows (present, absent or unknown), which domains it cites and whether it cites the client. When the check confirms an overview, the AI answer finding is marked observed instead of inferred.
An AI Overview is a summary Google writes with AI and places at the top of some search results. It answers the question directly and links to the pages it drew from. It appears mostly on informational searches such as how, what and comparison questions.
Do AI Overviews reduce website clicks?
Often, on the searches where they appear. The answer sits above the regular results, so fewer people click through. In Search Console this shows as steady impressions with a click-through rate near zero on page-one informational searches.
How do I get my page cited in an AI Overview?
Put a direct answer to the question in the first lines of the page, back it with real numbers and their sources, and use clear headings that match the question. Google picks sources itself, so there's no guaranteed method.
How can I tell if my site appears in an AI Overview?
Search the query yourself, signed out and from the right location, and check the overview's links for your domain. Results change by place and over time. RankUpside records this weekly for up to 50 searches per client.
Should I rewrite my title if an AI Overview takes my clicks?
No. The page already ranks; the overview answers the question before anyone reaches the results. Work on being cited, or aim the page at searches with buying intent.
Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic separately?
Google's AI features page says traffic from AI features is reported in the Performance report, within the Web search type. Check Google's current help pages and your own Search Console, since this reporting has changed over time.
Copperline Gutters got 27 clicks from named buyer searches in the last 4 weeks, up 23% from the 4 weeks before. Google hides the search terms behind 84% of all 289 search clicks. Rankings rose across the site: pages that steadily show up are up about 2.4 positions.
